DROPOUT PREVENTION & RECOVERY

OKLAHOMA

Under HB 1214, the Oklahoma State Board of Vocational and Technical Education is mandated to prepare a statewide plan to provide vocational education to at-risk students in grades 6 through 12. HB 1214 also authorizes the state board to award competitive grants to area vocational technical school districts targeting dropout recovery through consecutive budgetary cycles. From 2005 to 2009, the state dispersed between $6 and $9 million annually for dropout recovery.

House Bill 1050, enacted in 2009, mandates that the Oklahoma Department of Education encourage districts to create mentorship programs to reduce the dropout rates among middle- and high school students.

The compulsory attendage age in Oklahoma had been set at 18 prior to 2002. The maximum public school entitlement age is 21.
